The White River Shoal is a compact, featherweight fixed blade for people who would rather carry something that can't fail than a folder. It is a Smith & Sons design built by White River Knife & Tool in Fremont, Michigan, the latest step in a partnership that runs more than a decade, with Smith & Sons making many of White River's leather sheaths and White River making many of Smith & Sons' blades.
The Shoal runs a 2.75 inch drop point blade in CPM MagnaCut, hardened to 63 to 64 Rc and ground from stock just .07 inch thick. That thin, slicey edge is the whole point. MagnaCut gives it toughness and corrosion resistance to go with high hardness, so it holds up to wet, bloody work. Our comparison of every major knife steel explains why MagnaCut suits a knife like this.
The fine edge and slim profile make the Shoal a natural for cleaning birds, trout, and small game, and for the detail cuts bigger knives struggle with. Owners also carry it as a light EDC for food and small chores. If you want a bit more knife for the same work, the White River Small Game steps up in size.
Two tone textured G-10 scales come in green and orange, black and orange, gray and orange, and gray and red, giving a sure grip when your hands are wet. At 6.7 inches overall and just 1.4 ounces, it rides in the included Kydex sheath on a belt, in a pack, or around the neck without you noticing it's there.
Every Shoal is made in the USA and backed by White River's lifetime guarantee, which covers free repair or replacement and free sharpening for life. For other compact carry options, see the White River ATK and Model 1, or browse all fixed blade knives.
