The White River Ursus 45 is a no-frills workhorse built for camping, bushcraft, and field work. Made in the USA by White River Knife & Tool in Fremont, Michigan, it is the go-to knife in the wild for food prep, processing firewood, carving tools, and building shelter, and it takes the idea of a robust survival knife to the next level.
The Ursus 45 carries a 4.5 inch blade ground from .158 inch stock, 9.5 inches overall at 8.3 ounces. That thickness gives it the backbone for batoning and chopping, while the blade still carves cleanly for feather sticks and camp tools. It is one of the most capable bushcraft knives White River makes.
The Ursus 45 now comes standard in CPM MagnaCut hardened to 63 to 64 Rc, pairing strong edge retention and corrosion resistance with the toughness heavy woods work demands. Our comparison of every major knife steel explains why MagnaCut suits a hard-use knife like this.
The ergonomic handle is sized to fill the hand, with or without gloves, and stays comfortable through hours of use, whether you are chopping, carving, or doing fine detail work. We carry it in Black and OD Green Linen, Natural Burlap, and Black Burlap Micarta, which holds traction in wet conditions and is covered in our guide to knife handle materials.
A section of the spine is sharpened for striking a ferro rod, and one is included along with a Kydex sheath. A separate Ursus 45 leather sheath is available too. Like every White River, it is guaranteed for life with free sharpening. For a smaller version, see the Ursus Cub, or compare the Firecraft FC5.
