A kubaton is a short, rigid self defense tool that concentrates force in a strike or presses against joints and bony points, and Hinderer kubatons are machined to the same standard as Rick's knives rather than sold as keychain novelties. Rick's very first design was his Modular Baton, and these tools carry that idea forward as part of the Hinderer pens, TacTools, and kubatons collection from Rick Hinderer Knives, made in the USA.
The LK-1, short for Little Kubaton, is a solid 3.5 inch by half inch bar that rides on your keys with the included key ring and detachable lanyard, so it goes everywhere without taking up pocket space. It comes in matte black aluminum, brass, copper, and bronze titanium. Brass and copper add real heft for their size, while aluminum and titanium keep your key ring light.
The Modular Kubaton grew from Rick's idea of turning a kubotan into an everyday pen, so the tool is in your hand every day. The deluxe set includes the body, three heads (a pen, a strike bezel, and a smooth end), a pocket clip, and two stainless tightening pins for assembly. Swap the heads to run it as a writing pen, a striking tool, or both, in black, FDE, and OD green aluminum, including a Dog Paw design.
The two look similar, but they are built for different jobs. The Hinderer Extreme Duty is a pen first, with a fixed writing end and a full size Fisher refill. The Modular Kubaton configures at both ends and uses a smaller pen module with less ink, trading writing capacity for more ways to set up the tool. If you write a lot, start with the pen; if you want options, start with the kubaton.
Every Hinderer kubaton is CNC machined, hand finished, and checked in Rick's Shreve, Ohio shop with deep traction grooves for a sure grip and coarse threads that hold up to hard strikes. Pair one with an Investigator pen for a compact everyday setup.
