Pro-Tech Runt 5
The Pro-Tech Runt 5 is the fifth generation of the knife that started Pro-Tech. Dave Wattenberg designed the original Runt as a sub-two-inch push button auto, and the first batches were assembled by hand on a kitchen table. That story is told in full in our Pro-Tech brand history. The Runt 5 keeps the blade under two inches and updates everything around it.
Pro-Tech Runt 5 Specs
The Runt 5 carries a 1.96 inch blade on 0.11 inch stock in a roughly 3.25 inch integral aluminum handle. It is 5.125 inches open and weighs about 2.1 ounces. The clip is a deep carry with flush screws, set for right hand tip up carry. The blade is kept under two inches, which is why Pro-Tech markets the Runt 5 as California legal.
MagnaCut Blade and Automatic Action
Most current builds run CPM MagnaCut, with some in CPM 20CV, and our knife steel guide compares the two. Choose a Wharncliffe for a straight, controlled edge or a reverse tanto for a stronger tip. The button sits flush with the handle so it does not fire in the pocket, and like every Pro-Tech side opening automatic, the same button releases the lock to close.
Runt 5 Colors, Textures, and Customs
Smooth handles come in black, blue, Tiffany blue, green, red, pink, bronze, silver, and crimson tiger camo. Textured builds run black, blue, green, and grey, plus a grey Nexus pattern. Blades come stonewashed, satin, black DLC, or sapphire blue PVD. Some builds carry white pearl, mother of pearl, or black lip pearl buttons, and a custom version wears a two tone stainless steel handle.
Runt 5 vs Godson
The Runt 5 is the smallest Pro-Tech auto on our shelf, and the one for anyone working within a two inch blade limit. If blade length is not a constraint, the Godson is the next step up. It has a 3.15 inch stiletto blade at about 3.2 ounces, still slim enough for a dress pocket.
