The Spartan Blades Eleos is the crossbar lock folder in a lineup started by two retired Army Special Forces soldiers, and it is fully ambidextrous from the blade to the clip. Named for the Greek personification of mercy, it pairs a full-size drop point with a lock that releases the same way from either hand.
It is also one of the most approachable ways into the Spartan Blades catalog. It is part of the Field Grade line produced in Taiwan through Pineland Cutlery, the partnership Spartan formed with KA-BAR.
The crossbar lock is the heart of the knife. A spring-loaded bar spans both liners behind the tang. Press it from either side and the blade drops closed without your fingers ever crossing the blade's path, and lockup stays solid under hard work. The blade rides an IKBS ball bearing pivot for fast, smooth deployment. The deep carry clip mounts tip up for right or left hand, so nothing about the Eleos favors one side.
The blade is a 3.56 inch full flat ground drop point, cut from 0.142 inch 154CM at 57 to 59 HRC and finished in stonewash or black. 154CM is an American stainless workhorse that sharpens easily and holds a respectable edge, and our comparison of every major knife steel shows where it lands. The textured GFN handle comes in black, OD green, and blue. It keeps the whole knife to about 4.2 ounces at 8.5 inches overall, which is light for a full-size knife among our folding knives.
Among Spartan folders, the Eleos is the crossbar lock choice. The Nemec is the featherweight liner lock flipper. The Poros is a bigger 3.75 inch G-10 flipper, and the CTS-XHP Talos is the compact everyday carry option. The titanium Spartan Harsey Folder sits at the top of the range. If you want an ambidextrous hard-use folder with a real edge on it, the Eleos earns its place among serious tactical knives.
