The Spyderco Sage Series is unlike anything else in the catalog: one folding knife design, expressed again and again through different lock mechanisms, with each model paying tribute to the maker who invented or popularized its lock. Every Sage shares the same DNA — a full-flat-ground, leaf-shaped CPM S30V blade around three inches, a textured forefinger choil and thumb ramp, and a reversible deep-pocket wire clip. Spyderco donates approximately five percent of Sage sales to the National Alzheimer's Association's Denver, Colorado chapter, which has been part of the series' mission from the start.
The Sage concept is a living history of folding knife technology. Earlier entries in the series honored the LinerLock, the Reeve Integral Lock, the Bolt Action Lock, and the Mid-Back Lock, letting collectors compare mechanisms side by side in an identical platform. Our guide to knife lock types covers how each of those designs works and where it came from.
The Sage 5 showcases Spyderco's own Compression Lock, the patented mechanism from the Paramilitary 2 and Para 3 that is often mistaken for a LinerLock on the back of the handle but is substantially stronger and closes without putting fingers in the blade path. Skeletonized liners nest into carbon fiber and G-10 laminate scales, and the Sage 5 Lightweight trims the formula further with Bi-Directional Textured FRN for an easier daily carry.
The Sage 6 recognizes Kevin Smock's Button-Release Compression Lock, the variation that adds a button release to the scale and makes the Sage 6 one of Spyderco's most fidget-friendly folders. Limited versions have elevated the platform with premium steels like CPM REX 121 and S90V — see our comparison of every major knife steel for what those upgrades deliver — and these runs move quickly alongside other Spyderco sprint runs and exclusives.
At three inches of blade, the Sage sits in the sweet spot of Spyderco folding knives for everyday carry: bigger than a Dragonfly, trimmer than a Paramilitary 2, and refined enough that many collectors work through the entire series one lock at a time.
