Helle has hand built fixed blade knives in Holmedal, a fjord-side Norwegian village of about 500 people, since brothers Steinar and Sigmund Helle founded the company in 1932. Steinar came home from America with the drive to build a business; Sigmund brought the steel skills he learned from their blacksmith father; and the first knives sold from a bicycle Steinar rode 500 kilometers over the mountains to Oslo. Three generations later the family still runs the factory, and every knife still passes through up to 45 manual operations before it ships sharp.
Helle patented its laminate steel process in 1967 and has refined it ever since, now under the proprietary names H3LS and H3LC. Both sandwich a hard cutting core between tougher outer layers: H3LS runs a stainless core for wet-environment work, H3LC a high carbon core for traditional carbon steel performance. The core reaches 58 to 59 HRC for edge retention while the outer layers absorb lateral stress, letting Helle grind thinner, keener blade profiles without brittleness. Single-layer Scandinavian stainless covers the rest of the line: the Eggen, Gaupe, and Allmenn run 12C27, the full tang Nordlys and Polaris carry 14C28N, and the big Nord runs Sleipner tool steel. Survivorman Les Stroud has designed three knives with Helle, the Temagami, the compact Mandra, and the Wabakimi, each tested on his own expeditions and built for genuine bushcraft use. Helle grinds its scandi bevels at 22.5 degrees with no secondary bevel, a single flat plane from grind line to edge that carves aggressively and resharpens on any flat stone in the field. Handles are Nordic curly birch, hand sanded so no two knives match, with figured grain covered in our knife handle materials guide, and every knife ships in a stitched leather sheath.
