Hellbender Blade Co. machines fixed blades in Columbus, Ohio, and does nearly everything under its own roof: CNC machining, handle shaping, Cerakote, hardware, and final inspection, with only laser cutting and heat treatment sent out. The name sets the theme, because the hellbender, the mudpuppy, and the newt are all salamanders, and every knife in the line is named for one of the toughest amphibians in American water. Each one is backed by a lifetime warranty plus free sharpening for life, dull-from-use included, because these are built to be used hard, not babied.
Every current model runs CPM MagnaCut hardened to 62 to 64 HRC. The original Mudpup carries a 4.75 inch blade built for camp and kitchen chores, the Mudpup 4 trims the same pattern to a 3.75 inch blade at just over four ounces, and the Mudpup 5 Gen 2 refines the full-size platform. The Ranch Hand covers working ranch and farm duty, the compact Newt slides into EDC territory, and the Outfitter rounds out the family for field use. Tumbled and Cerakote blade finishes pair with burlap and canvas micarta or G-10 scales, with leather or Kydex sheath options across the line; see our knife handle materials guide for how those scales compare in hard use.
MagnaCut is the reason a knife this size can be run this hard: stainless corrosion resistance with toughness that older stainless steels could not touch, all broken down in our knife steel guide. Stainless T-25 hardware keeps everything serviceable, and the flat grinds land these squarely in the sweet spot of our fixed blade knives selection for anyone building a bushcraft or camp kit around one dependable blade.
