Big Idea Design builds titanium EDC gear for people who want to do more and carry less. Chadwick Parker and Joe Huang started the company in January 2009 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, launched their first product on Kickstarter in 2011, and have run more than forty campaigns since, raising north of four million dollars from backers. That funding model shaped the catalog. These are products designed around a specific complaint someone had, engineered until the complaint goes away, then machined out of Grade 5 titanium.
The pen line is where the brand made its name, and it covers every format. The Ti Arto EDC is the flagship, built around a patented auto adjusting collet that grips the refill directly so there is no tip wiggle, which is what lets it accept hundreds of different refills without shims or hacks. The Ti Click EDC puts that same collet in a retractable body. Beyond those, the Fountain EDC covers nib writing, the Ti Pocket Pro is the compact cap style option, the Ti Mini Pen goes on a keychain, the Slim Click trims the profile down, and the Base Line Bolt Action is the accessible entry into the range. The Bolt Action Marker applies their deployment mechanism to a marker, and the Dual Side Click, the USA Bolt Action, and the Sancho collaboration with KNAFS round things out. The Lookout is named after the mountain outside their shop, and it was designed with Mak Kelsay, who runs their CNC floor and holds ABS Journeyman Smith credentials. That combination is unusual. A forged blade smith drawing a knife that gets machined in house. The USA Lookout is cut in Chattanooga in MagnaCut with clip point and tanto profiles across G-10, natural micarta, and titanium scales. It runs 6.2 inches overall on a 2.2 inch blade at 0.12 inches thick, and it ships with two Kydex pocket sheaths, left and right, plus a titanium clip that moves between them. The Ti Lookout swaps to M390 on Grade 5 titanium. The Signal is the larger pocket fixed blade in Nitro-V or MagnaCut with a Dymalux walnut option. Folders include the Ti Pocket Knife II on ceramic bearings in M390, the original in S35VN, and the Overlook, which shrinks the Lookout language into a compact frame lock. The AUX MFG Titanium Pocket Bowie sits at the odd end of the range. Everything lives under Big Idea Design knives.
The Bit Bar II holds eight quarter inch hex bits in a titanium body with a push button release and a deep carry clip. The Bit Bar Inline Max adds three driver configurations and double sided bit storage. The Ti EDS II is a dedicated everyday screwdriver, the TPT Slide and Deluxe TPT cover multi tool duty, and the Titanium Utility Knife handles box cutter chores without the plastic. The USA collection is machined in their own Chattanooga shop. The rest comes from long term manufacturing partners overseas, frequently using Japanese, German, and American components. Big Idea Design has been open about that split since the beginning rather than burying it.
