Kunwu Knives formed in May 2019 when a team of veteran knifemakers in China, most with years behind the machinery that builds high-end folders for other names, decided to build superbly finished titanium knives under their own flag at prices nobody else could offer. The Tao's February 2021 Kickstarter proved the formula instantly, and Kunwu has run on custom-quality materials at production prices ever since.
Steel selection is the brand's calling card. Uddeholm Vanax SuperClean, a nitrogen-alloyed stainless with corrosion resistance ordinary steels cannot approach, anchors the catalog at 60 to 62 HRC. Böhler Elmax carries much of the rest, S390 high-speed steel runs 62 to 64 HRC on the Gringo for extreme edge retention, and Vancron, PM60, and ZDP-189 appear on select models. The Padre front flipper is the best-known design: a 3.5 inch Vanax clip point over diamond textured titanium with a Timascus pivot collar, 8.03 inches overall with a full four-finger grip. The Tao that launched the company continues through sheepsfoot, drop point, and evolved X-Tao versions, and that evolution introduced the XT Lock, Kunwu's crossbar mechanism, alongside frame lock and button lock options across the line. Every folder runs bearing pivots, milled titanium deep carry clips, and finish work that keeps getting compared to knives at three times the price.
