Big Idea Design builds titanium EDC gear for people who want to do more and carry less. Chadwick Parker and Joe Huang started the company in January 2009 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, launched their first product on Kickstarter in 2011, and have run more than forty campaigns since. That funding model shaped the catalog. Every product starts with a specific complaint someone had, gets engineered until the complaint goes away, then gets machined out of Grade 5 titanium.
Writing is where the brand made its name. The Ti Arto EDC grips the refill with a patented auto adjusting collet, so it takes more than 750 refills with no tip wiggle, and the Ti Click EDC puts that collet in a click body. The Base Line Bolt Action is the entry point, the Pocket Pro telescopes to fit its refill, and the Bolt Action Marker runs Sharpie inserts. Our EDC pen refill guide lists what every model takes. Most of the line comes in stonewashed, raw, or DLC titanium, the lightest and toughest pen metal there is. Bronze, brass, and copper versions of the Pocket Pro, Lil Sancho, and Mini Pen trade that featherweight feel for heft and a patina that ages with you. The Lookout is named after the mountain outside their shop and was designed with Mak Kelsay, who runs their CNC floor and holds ABS Journeyman Smith credentials. The USA Lookout is cut in Chattanooga in MagnaCut and ships with left and right Kydex pocket sheaths, while the Signal and Cloudland scale up the pocket fixed blade and the Ti Pocket Knife II and Overlook cover folders. The Bit Bar II holds eight quarter inch hex bits in titanium with a push button release, the Ti EDS II is a dedicated everyday screwdriver, the TPT Slide covers multi tool duty, and the Titanium Utility Knife handles box cutter chores without the plastic. All of it lives in Big Idea Design pocket tools. The USA collection is machined in their Chattanooga shop, and the rest comes from long term partners overseas, a split the brand has been open about from the start.
