The Leatherman Surge is the biggest multi-tool in the Leatherman lineup and the flagship for heavy-duty work. When the Wave Plus isn't enough tool, the Surge is where the brand takes you. It runs 21 integrated tools, the largest pliers Leatherman makes, and the longest blades they fit to any multi-tool, all packed into a 4.5-inch closed frame weighing 12.5 ounces. The Surge exists because some jobs need more leverage and reach than the Wave platform delivers. The plier head is the biggest Leatherman builds, which translates to more torque on stubborn fasteners and more grip on larger workpieces. Four outside-opening tools, including two knife blades and spring-action scissors, give you fast deployment without unfolding the whole tool. Every feature except the plier head locks when deployed, and every feature is one-hand operable. The 21-tool count covers pliers, replaceable wire cutters, stranded-wire cutters, electrical crimper, wire stripper, dual 420HC blades, saw, scissors, awl, 8-inch ruler, can and bottle opener, dual files, blade exchanger, large bit driver, and multiple screwdrivers.

Blade Exchanger System and Dual Blade Setup

The blade exchanger is the Surge's signature feature and not found elsewhere in the Leatherman lineup. It allows you to swap between the saw and diamond-coated file on a single handle position, which is why the Surge gets two cutting implements in the slot other tools use for one. Combined with the wood and metal file and the plain-edge and serrated 420HC knife blades, you have four distinct cutting and shaping tools on a single multi-tool frame. The primary blade runs 3.1 inches, the longest on any Leatherman multi-tool.

420HC Steel and 154CM Replaceable Cutters

The knife blades are 420HC, which sharpens easily and holds a working edge through the mixed-material tasks the Surge was built for. The replaceable wire cutters run 154CM, a harder stainless that extends cutter life and resists chipping against tougher wire. When the cutters eventually wear out, they swap rather than forcing you into a new tool.
