Hammer Down Forge is Kieran Klein, a one-man operation in Floyd, Virginia, deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Klein started blacksmithing over a coal fire in 2012, forging his first cutting tools from railroad spikes, shifted fully to knifemaking the next year, and built the shop up piece by piece, including a digitally controlled heat treat kiln, in-house cryogenic treatment, and his own Rockwell hardness tester. Every grind, heat treat, and sheath fit passes through his hands alone.
The Companion is the heart of the current catalog: a compact fixed blade at about 7.5 inches overall, sized for everyday carry with a curved handle that indexes the tip exactly where you want it, riding in a stamped leather pouch sheath with a pocket clip. Blades run CPM 3V for maximum toughness, AEB-L for a fine, easy-honing edge, and CPM MagnaCut for the best of both, each covered in our knife steel guide and every one cryo treated in-house. Handles layer micarta, G-10, and carbon fiber in combinations that never repeat, detailed in our knife handle materials guide, and larger camp designs rotate through the shop between Companion runs.
