Hammer Down Forge is Kieran Klein, a one-man knife shop in the USA. Klein started blacksmithing over a coal fire in 2012, forging his first cutting tools from railroad spikes, and shifted fully to knifemaking the next year. He built the shop piece by piece, adding a digitally controlled heat treat kiln, in-house cryogenic treatment, and his own Rockwell hardness tester. Every grind, heat treat, and sheath fit passes through his hands alone.
The Companion is the heart of the catalog. It is a compact fixed blade at about 7.4 inches overall, with a 3.25 inch wharncliffe blade for push cuts, whittling, and detail work. The curved handle indexes the tip right where you want it, and a leather sheath handles belt or pocket carry. Blades run CPM 3V for toughness, AEB-L for a fine, easy-honing edge, and CPM MagnaCut for the best of both. Every one is cryo treated in-house, and our knife steel guide covers how they compare. Special runs add San Mai with a Hitachi White core and Nebula Damascus.
The Outlaw steps up to a 4 inch MagnaCut blade at 8.875 inches overall, light enough for daily carry and ready for light field use and bushcraft. The Sentry is the compact option, with a 3.25 inch blade at 7.125 inches overall. Both run 0.138 inch stock in darkwash or two tone finishes and ride in brown or black leather belt sheaths.
Klein layers Micarta, G-10, Richlite, carbon fiber, and figured woods like maple, cocobolo, and ironwood in combinations that never repeat, often with chevron spacers and colored liners. Our knife handle materials guide explains each one. The same hands now build a MagnaCut paring knife with a 3.75 inch blade in thin 0.10 inch stock, a handmade addition to our paring knives for cooks who want custom work in the kitchen.
