Located in Fremont, Michigan, White River Knives is a tight-knit family affair, with nearly half the employees members of the Cammenga family. Once upon a time, compasses were the family business, and their brand was known the world over. In the early 2000s, they sold that business with lofty plans of retiring to travel the country, but it didn't take more than a few years before the itch to be more productive became too much to bear. Around that time, they fell into an opportunity to buy the contents of a knife maker's shop, and once they secured a location and got everything installed, they were off to the races.
Over the last 13 years or so, they've earned a well-deserved reputation for top-notch fixed blades made for real world use and abuse. The knives are stunning to look at, no question about it, but they're definitely meant to get dirty. With a small crew of fewer than a dozen people, they crank out about 80,000 units a year, and virtually all components, from the steel to the handle pins, are sourced in the United States.
In the White River lineup, there's something for everyone. The Model 1 is a stellar choice for an EDC knife, while the Ursus takes the notion of a robust survival knife to the next level.
