7Forge Knives began in 2017, when Tim Ogg and Jessie Wipperman started heating rebar in a homemade foundry Tim's nephew had built for an eighth grade science project, with early tools from Tim's father. That hobby grew into what the shop calls Iowa's largest semi-production knife company. Every blade still carries the backward 7 maker's mark from a punch that stamped the number in reverse.
Compact Fixed Blades for Carry and the Field
7Forge builds compact fixed blade knives that carry light and work hard. The Hawkeye platform runs a MagnaCut trailing point in two sizes: the 3.25 inch Hawkeye EDC at 3.75 ounces, and the 4 inch Hawkeye Hunter, a 6 ounce game knife on 5/32 inch stock that earned a spot in our hunting knife gift guide. The 7Forge Culprit is the featherweight, a 2.6 ounce CPM 154 blade on .100 inch stock, and the 3 inch AEB-L 7Forge Jackal 2.0 is one of our DLT Trading exclusives. Every knife ships in a leather sheath, a natural fit among our hunting knives.
Stainless Blade Steels and Custom Handle Builds
The knives we stock run three stainless steels picked for daily carry. CPM MagnaCut pairs real toughness with excellent corrosion resistance, CPM 154 is a proven workhorse that sharpens easily, and fine grained AEB-L takes a keen edge fast. Handles are where the shop shows off, from burlap, linen, and canvas micarta to Richlite, G-10, Dymalux, desert ironwood, koa, and amboyna burl, set off with colored liners and mosaic pins. Where Are 7Forge Knives Made?
7Forge knives are made in Iowa, USA, by a small team working out of the Des Moines area, with hands-on knifemaking classes held at the shop in Ogden. Co-founder Jessie Wipperman won Forged in Fire Season 9, Episode 25, which makes Wipperman, in Ogg's words, Iowa's only Forged in Fire champ, and holds Apprentice standing with the American Bladesmith Society.
