The 7Forge Hawkeye Hunter is a MagnaCut hunting knife made in Iowa for skinning and field dressing, with a 4 inch trailing point on 5/32 inch stock and a 5 inch handle at just over 6 ounces. It is the field-sized half of the 7Forge Hawkeye platform and one of the whitetail picks in our hunting knife gift guide.
Skinning is where a trailing point earns its keep. The Hawkeye Hunter's tip rides up above the spine and out of the way, so the long, sweeping belly does the work of separating hide from meat in smooth strokes while the point stays clear of the hide and the body cavity. The same curve handles caping around the face and ears, where control matters more than reach. Thicker 5/32 inch stock keeps the blade stiff through joints, the 5 inch handle leaves room for a gloved hand, and the leather belt sheath rides through a full season. For everyday carry, the Hawkeye EDC puts the same profile on a 3.25 inch blade. See our full range of hunting knives for other patterns.
A deer camp knife sees blood, creek water, and long gaps between cleanings, and CPM MagnaCut was made for exactly that. It is about as stainless as knife steel gets while staying tough enough for joint work, and it holds an edge through more than one animal before it needs a touch up. See how it stacks up in our guide to every major knife steel. Handle builds run from desert ironwood, koa, black ash burl, spalted tamarind, and stacked leather that match a walnut rifle stock, to burlap, linen, and canvas micarta, Richlite, and G-10 that hold their grip when wet. Our handle materials guide breaks down how each one handles cold, slick hands.
