Pro-Tech Knives has built American automatics and button lock folders in Southern California since 1999, a run we trace in our Pro-Tech brand history. Dave Wattenberg's family-owned shop machines most of its own parts from bar aluminum, sheet steel, and titanium, then hand fits, finishes, and sharpens every knife in small batches, and that work keeps taking home Blade Show Knife of the Year awards.
Pro-Tech Automatic Knives
Pro-Tech made its name on coil spring side opening automatic knives. The Runt 5 is the fifth generation of the company's first design, a sub-two-inch MagnaCut auto. The Godfather puts a 4 inch 154CM spear point in an Italian stiletto silhouette, and the Godson scales it down, both offered in left-hand builds. Dmitry Sinkevich drew the sheepsfoot Oligarch, the Newport is the slim 3 inch gent's auto, and the Tactical Response series runs TR-2 through TR-5. The Rockeye, designed by Marine veteran Les George, is the full-size working auto of the group.
Pro-Tech Button Lock Folders
Pro-Tech built manual knives around the button lock from its autos. The Malibu pairs a tuned button lock detent with a ball bearing pivot, and the Malibu Operator was named Overall Knife of the Year at Blade Show 2022. Ferrum Forge's Mordax runs the same action with more blade, and the Cambria 2 brings back Pro-Tech's first flipper. The Peace Neighbor designed Avalon trades the flipper tab for thumb studs on a 4.25 inch MagnaCut drop point. The TR-3 Integrity, a manual TR-3, took American-Made Folding Knife of the Year in 2024.
Pro-Tech Collaborations and Custom Knives
Bob Terzuola's ATCF auto and its Ultimate version took Collaboration and Investor/Collector Knife of the Year in 2022, and the lineup carries Emerson CQC-7 autos, the Strider PT+, Walter Brend's Brend Classic, and the Pallas auto built with Spartan Blades. The custom shop adds Mike Irie hand ground blades, Damascus, and pearl and abalone buttons, and its custom pieces have won Investor/Collector Knife of the Year from the 2013 Newport to the 2024 Ultimate Custom Oligarch.
Pro-Tech Blade Steels and Warranty
MagnaCut runs through most of the lineup, with MagnaMax on the TR-4, 154CM on the Godfather and Godson, and CPM 20CV and S35VN on select models; our knife steel guide compares them. Most handles are 6061-T6 aluminum, smooth or textured, and Lynch Northwest Pro-Tech clips add standard and stubby replacements. Every knife carries Pro-Tech's limited lifetime warranty to the original owner. Drops sell through fast, so sign up for drop notifications.
