Spartan Blades was founded in 2008 by Curtis Iovito and Mark Carey, two retired Army Special Forces NCOs, in a pre-Civil War mule barn in Aberdeen, North Carolina, just outside Fort Bragg. Their first collaboration was with Bill Harsey, the designer behind the Yarborough knife given to Special Forces Qualification Course graduates, and the company has been collecting Blade Show awards ever since. In 2019 Spartan merged with KA-BAR to form Pineland Cutlery.
Spartan Blades Fixed Blade Knives
Spartan's roots are in fixed blade knives. Harsey's designs fill the Harsey fixed blades collection, including the Difensa, Dagger, Kukri, and Fighter, along with the outdoor Nessmuk. His MagnaCut Clandestina was named Overall Knife of the Year at Blade Show 2024. For tactical work there are the MagnaCut Ares and Horkos, the Ronin Shinto recurve from Tu Lam and Iovito, the CQB ring dagger, and two daggers from Marine veteran Les George, the V-14 and the WWII tribute Raider. Everyday carry fixed blades include Iovito's Moros, the compact Phrike, the skeletonized Formido, the Enyo neck knife, and the Elmax Linden and Willow in Kydex. Built with KA-BAR in 1095 Cro-Van are the Alala, the Damysus, and the Machai chopper. The Spartan KA-BAR rebuilds the USMC fighting knife in MagnaCut.
Spartan Blades Folding Knives
On the folding knife side, the titanium framelock Spartan Harsey Folder won American-Made Knife of the Year at Blade Show 2016 and comes in 4 and 3.25 inch sizes. Harsey also drew the CTS-XHP Talos, and other outside designs include the Astor by Les George, the Nemec flipper by Ondřej Němec, and the Ronin Shoto karambit by Tu Lam. Iovito's titanium Pandia runs a MagnaCut or Damascus blade on IKBS bearings. The Poros is a G-10 bearing flipper, and the Eleos runs an ambidextrous crossbar lock. Pro-Tech also builds the Spartan Pallas as an automatic, found in our Pro-Tech collection.
Spartan Blades Steel, Heat Treat, and Warranty
Spartan's premium knives run CPM MagnaCut, S45VN, S35VN, CTS-XHP, and Elmax with Spartan's double deep cryo heat treatment. The KA-BAR built models use 1095 Cro-Van, a tough carbon steel that's easy to sharpen in the field. Our knife steel guide compares them all. The Grafi titanium bolt action pen and the Spartan accessories, from beads to challenge coins, finish out the gear. Spartan backs its knives with a lifetime warranty.
